Yes, Deepfake has gotten an extremely awful reputation over the years due to the overwhelming amount of revenge porn, compromising videos and seriously disturbing AI apps like DeepNude, however, this technology can be quite useful if you put it to good use!

What are Deepfakes?

Deepfake technology — a term derived from the combination of “deep learning” and “fake” — is a technology that uses a special type of neural-network structure that can perfectly fit anyone into any video or photo they were never really in, to begin with. This technology has been frowned upon quite often as it gives people the ability to spread false news, create celebrity porn, carry out financial frauds and do a whole lot of shady things including building applications that are able to ‘undress’ women!

Example of Deepfakes

While this technology could be used to do some truly horrifying things, it’s not all bad and here's proof!

  • David Beckham speaks nine languages in a commercial about malaria awareness!

This is a brilliant example that shows that deepfakes are not all about the doom and gloom! This video was created in order to launch a petition to end malaria by the Malaria Must Die campaign. Thanks to AI, deepfake technology was used to manipulate his facial movements, thereby creating the visual illusion of David Beckham speaking words in each language.

  • Voice deepfakes give back people who suffer from a wide range of medical conditions the ability to speak naturally. Communication, expressing one's emotions is vital to a human being and the fact that deepfakes can give people the ability to speak is truly amazing!
  • The deepfake technology is on the road to becoming the hot new cooperate tool as it allows businesses with fewer resources to expand their marketing horizons by incorporating deepfake into visual storytelling.
  • Useful deepfake applications such as virtual storefronts displaying your appearance in clothing items, thereby, opening doors to a whole new world of online shopping.

These are some of the examples in which deepfake technology is used for the greater good and believe it or not, there’s lots more to where that came from. Much like any other technology out there, deepfake too is not all black and white and it's up to our developers and users to utilize this revolutionary tool to put out more good into the world!
